The extent of the lava field (stretching all the way to the sea) seen over volcanic rocks from of Eldfell, which erupted in 1973, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland. The eruption lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January.
