Richard Hoe invented a press—his revolving 8-cylinder hoe press could print both sides of the paper in a single operation.
Pictured in this 1901 illustration is an 8-cylinder revolving hoe press. English-born, American mechanic Richard Hoe had invented a rotary printing press in 1843. It placed type on a revolving cylinder, which made the process much faster than that using a flatbed printer. In 1870, he perfected his press by inventing one that was capable of printing both sides of the paper in a single operation. The press also used a roll of paper that was five miles long. The mechanism would send 800 feet of paper through the gears per minute. In time, Hoe added cylinders to improve the process.
