Artist/engraver/cartographer: Guillaume de l'Isle / Philippe Buache. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color and decorative title cartouche. The map shows the routes of early explorers de la Roché, Magellan (who gave his name to the strait separating Tierra del Fuego from the rest of the continent, Amerigo Vespucci (who gave his forename "America" to the New World), Sarmiento de Gamboa & Halley (Antarctic explorer and astronomer of comet fame). South Georgia is marked with its original name of Roche Island, after its discoverer. The Falkland Islands are named after their discoverer, Sebald de Weert; they were known as the Sebald Islands until well into the 18th century. The map notes with an illustration that the southern ocean is populated with many animals which are "half-fish and half-bird"
