Gram negative cell wall. Artwork showing the structure of a Gram negative bacterial cell wall. It consists of an inner (cytoplasmic) phospholipid membrane (bottom), a think layer of peptidoglycan (blue) and then an outer phospholipid membrane (top) containing lipopolysaccharides. Both membranes contain transmembrane proteins (various colours) that facilitate the movement of molecules into and out of the cell.
