FIRST ANNUAL REPORT. 233 The rate of distillation is governed by the needle valve I whichcontrols the live steam entering still. Summary. The advantages of the absorption over the compressor method forextracting gasoline from natural gas may be summed up as follows: (1) Greater recovery. (2) Lower installation cost. (3) Lower operating cost. A recovery of at least jV of a gallon per 1000 feet of gas canordinarily be made from so called dry natural gas or which haspreviously been treated by the compressor method. In a paper readbefore the Natural Gas Association of America at Pittsburg, May, 1916,Messrs. Burrel, Biddison and Oberfell of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, estimate the cost of an absorption plant, capable of handling60,000,000 feet of gas per day, at from $ to $ per 1,000 feet ofgas. Even doubling the maximum estimate, a small plant capable ofhandling ,
