There are great difficulties in determin-ing what might be considered species in forms which are re-ferred to this form genus, and the Corticium stage has not yet AirrOBASlDlOMYCETES 445 been studied in sufficient detail to be of much assistance. Never-theless, there are certain characters of the mycelium by means ofwhich it was believed to be possible more or less accurately todistinguish the Rhizoctonia from the mycelium of other fungi, oreven with some accuracy to distinguish different species of Rhi-zoctonia, or sterile stages referred to the genus. It is only withinthe past four years that there has been found associated with thesterile mycelial form (the Rhizoctonia) this perfect stage, whichhas
