Demolition of the old city centre of Doha, Qatar, underway ahead of redevelopment. October 2009.

The city of Doha, Qatar, has been undergoing wholesale redevelopment for much of the first decade of the 21st century, to sweep away the 1970s and 80s concrete box buildings and replace them with more ornate and luxurious structures. The building programme commenced with high-rise towers in the New District on the previously undeveloped western side of the city and the construction of the West Bay lagoon, Ritz Carlton and then the Pearl and Zig-Zag Tower accommodation, at the same time as the old souq was torn down and a retro-styled replacement Souq Waqif was built over many acres in the heart of the city. In late 2009 inner city development continued with the bulldozing buildings in the heart of the long-established commercial district just behind Souq Waqif, which is the work in progress seen here.
