Coral reef. Aerial view of a reef island, part of the Lakshadweep Archipelago of 36 islands, about 350 kilometres west of India. It is typical of coral islands, consisting of a ring of coral reefs just below the sea surface, which enclose a deeper lagoon. Sand and other sediments drifting over the reef form raised islands. Wind-borne plant seeds are then able to establish stabilising vegetation.
