View of Tower Bridge from South Bank of River Thames. This great feat of engineering is called a Bascule Suspension Bridge, as the lower, road level span is capable of hinging vertically from both ends to allow large vessels through. Opened in 1894, it has a span if 244 metres. The two towers are linked at the top by two walkways.
