WASHINGTON DC, United States — The Wharf, a mile-long waterfront development along the Washington Channel, represents one of the largest urban renewal projects in the city's history. The mixed-use neighborhood combines residential, commercial, and entertainment spaces along the Southwest Waterfront. The development preserved the historic Maine Avenue Fish Market, established in 1805, making it the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the United States.

Photograph by David Coleman. The Wharf in Washington DC is a $ billion, mile-long waterfront development along the Washington Channel in the city's Southwest quadrant. Opened in October 2017, the development encompasses million square feet of mixed-use space along 24 acres of land and more than 50 acres of water. The project represents one of Washington DC's largest urban renewal efforts, transforming the historic Southwest Waterfront into a modern waterfront district. The development preserved and incorporated the historic Maine Avenue Fish Market, established in 1805, which maintains its status as the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the United States. The Wharf features multiple piers, a marina with 450 slips, hotels, residential buildings, office spaces, restaurants, and retail establishments. The development includes significant public spaces, including the District Pier, Transit Pier, and Market Pier, connected by a continuous waterfront promenade. The Wharf also houses The Anthem, a 6,000-capacity music venue, making it a significant entertainment destination in the capital region.
