Tufa rock formation. This calcium carbonate rock formation is formed by deposition from solution by water flowing over the rock at upper right. The water is saturated with calcium carbonate, and the tufa has formed as the water drips onto the rocks below. The steps in the tufa formation were formed as it was mined for its mineral content. This formation is known as Tuefels Chilen, and is found in the Baental Valley, a small side valley of the Toess Valley near Winterthur in Zurich Canton, Switzerland. This formation is now a protected site and part of the hydrology science path 91, in the Toess Valley.
