At presentthe total number of blast furnaces in the State is twenty-six. Thecommercial deposits of iron ore in Virginia are confined to the Pied-mont and Appalachian region, and include three important typesof ore, namely, limonite (brown hematite), red hematite, andmagnetite. The sulphides (pyrite and pyrrhotite) occur in manyplaces, but they do not form as yet an important source of themetal, but are extensively mined for use in the manufacture ofsulphuric acid. The annual production of iron ores in Virginiaamounts to about 725,000 long tons, valued at approximately$1,500,000. Of this production brown hematite constitutesabout 90 per cent., red hematite about per cent.,and magnetite. 49 less than one per cent. Deposits of magnetite are widely dis-tributed through the crystalline area which form importantfuture reserves of iron ore. The production of pig iron in Vir-ginia in 1907 was valued at $8,963,000. Virginia has long held the position of first producer of pyrite(iron sulphide used in the manufacture of sulphuric acid) amongpyrite-producing States in the United States. Commercial py-rite occurs in Louisa, Stafford, Spotsylvania, and Prince Williamcounties, and mines are opened in each county. The pyrite minesof Louisa and Prince William counties are the largest ones in theUnited States. Pyrrhotite, magnetic pyrite, used for the samepurpose as pyrite, occurs in great abundance in Floyd, Carroll, and Grayson counties. This ore is mined near Monarat in Carrollcounty, and treated at Pulaski for sulphuric acid. The annualproduction of pyrite and pyrrhotite in Virginia exceeds $400,000in value. The principal gold belt in Virginia extends fro
