The Duke of Orleans leaves the Royal Palace, Paris, 31st July 1830 (1882-1884). Artist: Unknown
The Duke of Orleans leaves the Royal Palace, Paris, 31st July 1830 (1882-1884). A man waves the republican tricolor as Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans, makes his way on horseback through the barricades to the Hotel de Ville. The July Revolution of 1830 overthrew the monarchy of King Charles X and his unpopular conservative regime. Lous Philippe, head of the more liberal Orleans branch of the House of Bourbon, assumed the throne with the title 'King of the French', rather than the more traditional 'King of France' in order to emphasise the popular origin of his reign. Louis Philippe ruled France until the monarchy was overthrown by the Revolution of 1848.
