Description. — Bill short, pointed; forehead with more or less of a shield; feet with large lobes. Adults (sexes alike) : Head and neck blackish, sometimes small whitish spot below eye; general plumage bluish-slaty, lighter below; back and scapulars tinged olive; flight-feathers slate; wing edged nar- rowly white and secondaries tipped same, forming white bar which hardly shows on closed wing; primaries growing blackish at tips; region of vent black, which color extends in form of wedge over central under tail-coverts; outer under tail-coverts white, forming a V; bill whitish, tip horn color, banded near tip of upper mandible with chestnut, spot of same below it on lower mandible, edged below with yellow; shield on forehead "dark chestnut brown"; iris red; legs and feet yellowish- green ; lobes light leaden-gray. Young in juvenal plumage: Similar to adult but generally more olive and lighter above and more whitish below and bill even whiter, lacking spots; iris brown. Downy young: Blackish, with elongated, crinkled, bristly, orange feather-tips on throat, cheeks, neck, wings and back; „ p some hoary tips on under surface of body; bill orange-red, tipped black.
