H Ornamental writing is only attractive to the refined eyewhen there is a harmonious relation of light and shadedlines. That the writing artist must have a thorough knowl-edge of the principles governing such harmonious relationsneeds no demonstration. It is self-evident. The amateurwho has no definite mental perception of the forms he istrying to make will sometimes strike a pleasing letter orcombination by accident, but the adept, with a clear mentalvision, makes the same pleasing form by design. The ama-teur occasionally makes the correct form, while the adeptseldom fails to make it, chiefly because he plainly picturesin his the mind the form he is about to execute. Ornamentalwriting is not, tnen, hand training alone. It is mental train-ing as well. The eye must see, the mind perceive, as wellas the hand execute.
