CULTIVATION. See that the ground is well drained, naturally or otherwise : work it up fine and deep and make it very rich with well rotted barn-yard manure. Locate the plants eight inchos apart in rows three feet apart. Spread out the roots in a trench made deep enough to permit their crowns to be covered with three or four inches of mellow earth. Give the bed liberal dressings of manure at intervals, and, except near the sea shore, three pounds of salt per square yard early every spring. Do not cut for use until the plants have grown two seasons. Conover's Colossal—This variety is much superior in size and quality to any other, being remarkably tender and fine fiavored. This deserves to 6e ranked among the best early products of the garden. It affords the earliest material for fine pies and fresh table sauce, continues long in use. and is valuable for canning. Make the ground rich and deep, as recommended for Asparagus^ Plant four feet apart each way. Myatt's Linnaeus—Those who have never grown this variety, which is of superior quality, will hardly recognize the old "Pie Plant.^' It is an early, tender variety» without being in the least tough or stringy, with a mild, sub-acid HARDSHELL ALMOND.
