On July 6,1774, he waspresent at a great meetingheld by the patriots in NewYork to favor the FirstContinental , impulsive, thor-oughly interested, he lis-tened to the cautious lukewarm speeches. Finally hecould stand it no longer and, stepping to the platform,began to address the meeting himself. The impressionmade by this boy orator of seventeen was great and deep. 259. Alexander Hamilton. Once aroused, Hamiltons keen interest in the fight forindependence never lagged. During the campaign aroundNew York he acted as captain of a company of artillery,which he had trained so well that it attracted general had a share in the victories of Trenton and Princeton,although by that time his company was reduced to a merehandful of men. And at Yorktown he headed the assaulton one of the British outworks and gallantly captured it. Early in the war, Washington was attracted by theyoung soldier; and in March, 1777, he appointed Hamiltonhis aide, with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
