Govert Bidloo (1649-1713), Dutch anatomist. Bidloo studied medicine at the University of Franeker in what is now the Netherlands. He lectured in anatomy at The Hague, and from 1694 was professor of anatomy at the University of Leiden. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1696. His most famous work is his anatomical atlas 'Anatomia Humani Corporis' (1685), one of the most important anatomical works of the 17th century. This artwork, by Gerard de Lairesse, is the frontispiece to that work. The inscription gives his name in Latin (Godefridus Bidloo) and lauds Bidloo by comparing him to the Belgian anatomist Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564).
