James Stewart, Jr., associate-editor of this work for thestate of New Jersey, has a brilliant record as a volunteer soldierin the Civil war. He was bom at Stewartsville, Warren Co.,New Jersey, on March 22, 1840. Shortly after coming of age,he entered the Union army from New Jersey in Sept., 1861,and was mustered into the United States service for a termof three years as first lieutenant in the 9th infantry, , 1861; was promoted to the rank of captain Feb. 10, 1862;major, Dec. 22, 1862; lieutenant-colonel, Jan. 8, 1863; colonel,June 20, 1864; and was brevetted brigadier-general, U. , on March 13, 1865, for meritorious services. Hewas mustered out and honorably discharged July 12, 1865,on the conclusion of a period of service of nearly four
