Defensive outer wall and ditch Martello Tower number 73 at Eastbourne known as the Wish Tower, one of fourteen towers built along Pevensey bay as a defensive measure against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. About 12m high (with two floors) and probably had a garrison of one officer and 15–25 men. The round structure and thick walls of solid masonry made it resistant to cannon fire, and its height made it an ideal platform for a single heavy artillery piece, mounted on the flat roof and able to traverse, and hence fire over, a complete 360° circle. This tower had both a defensive 360 degree ditch and a defensive outer wall.
