View S of the interior of Quoyness Neolithic chambered cairn, Sanday, Orkney, showing entrances to 3 of the 6 burial cells off the main chamber & a stone-lined pit (formerly covered with a stone slab) in the SE corner. The chamber, built mainly of water-worn stones, stands to its full height of 4m. The walls lean inwards towards the top to reduce the size of slabs required for the roof. The chamber is entered from the SE side via by a low ( high) passage 9m long. The cist & 4 of the cells contained human remains from the early 3rd millennium BC. The tomb is situated beside the shore on the E side of the Els Ness peninsula in Lady Parish on the S side of the island of Sanday. There are many other prehistoric burial monuments in the same area.
