The up stream side of the dam will be well gravelled. There will be an abutment only on the Maryland end of the dam, builtof good rubble masonry laid in water proof cement. .The engineer shall, at any time, have the right to increase or diminishthe quantity of iron used, and to reject any timber or plank he may con-sider unfit for the work. 24 [ Doc. Be it enacted by the General Assembly, That the Chesapeake and OhioCanal Company be, and they are hereby, empowered, whenever it shallbe, in the judgment of the President and Directors thereof, expedient, inlieu of bridges, to substitute boats, properly fitted for the transportationof persons, wagons, and carriages, of every description, across the canal,wherever a public or private road shall render a bridge or ferry necessary,and such road cannot be conducted conveniently under the canal.
