Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion) with the phoenix on the top. The Kinkaku-ji (which means "Golden Pavilion Temple") is the popular name of Rokuon-ji Temple, which means "Deer Garden Temple". It was originally built in 14th century as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and converted into a Zen temple of the Rinzai school, by his son. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955 after a fire. Kinkaku-ji is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, added to the Unesco World Heritage List in 1994. Kyoto.
