View NNE of a re-erected Roman column in front of the south transept & central tower of York Minster, England, UK. The Minster stands on the site of the principia, the C4thAD Roman Headquarters Building of the Sixth Legion. This column from the principia's great hall was excavated in 1969 from under the south transept. It was re-erected in Minster Yard in 1979 by the York Civic Trust to celebrate the 1900th anniversary of the traditional founding of York (Eboracum) in AD71 (probably AD78+) by the Ninth Legion. King Edwin of Northumbria was baptized on Easter Day AD627 by St Paulinus in a wooden church on the site & several minsters built in stone followed. The south & north transepts were built in the mid C13th by Archbishop Walter de Gray. The stained glass of the Rose Window commemorates the ending of the War of the Roses by the marriage of Henry VII to Elizabeth of York at Westminster on 18 January 1486.
