Don Carlos draws his sword on his father, King Philip II, after the king denies his son's plea for freedom.

Don Carlos is a five-act historical tragedy by the German author and philosopher Friedrich Schiller that is based loosely on the life of King Philip II of Spain, who ruled from 1554-1598, which was also the time of the Spanish Inquisition. It was written between 1783-1787 and first performed in Hamburg in 1787. In this illustration here Don Carlos draws his sword on his father, King Philip II, after the king denies his son's plea for freedom or more freedoms for the Flemish people he rules. The Marquis of Posa disarms him and Don Carlos is arrested.
