Colonel Parker at Chicago. — In 1883 ColonelParker was invited to the presidency of the Chicago(then called the Cook County) Normal School, wherehe labored for over fifteen years, putting into practicehis theories, so like those of Froebel. Students flockedto his institution from almost every state in the West,attracted by the popularity of the new ^^ fad,^ and byParkers personality. Teachers went from his facultyto other institutions throughout the country. Hisvirtue lay in trying to do, and in a measure succeedingin doing, what others for centuries had said should bedone. He did not do the actual work of his subordi-nates, it is true; but he encouraged, he inspired, hesupported, he protected them, and made their workpossible. H
