In a country sovaried, all kinds of land may be found, from the rich river bottom suchas that in the Fraser delta, through all the stages to the bare rock witha little sand and moss on the mountain heights. In the valleys of thesections where the rainfall is plentiful the land is rich and heavy, inother parts it requires irrigation from the mountain streams to make itproductive. On the higher plateaus, cattle and horses flourish on the. Salmon Fisheries, British Columbia. rich bunch grass, and ranching is a profitable occupation. All the grainsand vegetables of a temperate climate are grown, and in addition, fruitgrowing is becoming important and promises to assume large propor-tions, for fruit trees flourish remarkably, and the Canadian Pacific Rail-way furnishes good facilities for rapid transport. The Government Ex-perimental Farm at Aggasiz is a revelation to most people in the practicalpossibilities of fruit culture, and must prove of the greatest benefit tothe fruit growers of the Province. On this farm there are under culti-vation and careful observation over twelve hundred varieties of apples CANADA. 95 and five hundred and fifty of pears, in addition to many kinds of peaches,plums, walnuts, cherries and small fruits.
