Some observations made in travelling through France, Italy, &cin the years MDCCXX, MDCCXXI, and MDCCXXII . heloweft feat might be out of the reach of the wild beafts that wereput to fight there. I would have had the fellow that attendedus to have dug away fome of the earth, to try how it was withinthe ground, but he told me he durft not, nor would the promifeof a good gratuity induce him to venture. I meafured feveralof the fteps, and found the height of them from fifteen to feven-teen inches; and the depth of the feat from two foot three totwo foot fix inches: this difference of two or three inches inthe heights of the upper fteps might poflibly be accidental; butthat the height of the loweft, as it appears even above theground, fliould exceed the height of any of the reft, a wholefoot and more, muft have been with defign. In fome particularplaces the fteps or degrees are halved, for the eafier defcendingor afcending between the lower and higher ranks of fteps orfeats; and therefore thofe halved fteps are indeed moft pro-perly to be called fteps, the reft were properly feats.
