It is appropriate on this occasion toreview briefly the origin of farm management investigtions in theDepartment of Agriculture and to give the history of the establish-ment of cooperative relations with the Ohio Experiment Station inthis work. In 1894 I assumed the responsibility^ for the experimental fieldwork of the Experiment Station of the state of Washington, theregion being one with whose agriculture I was not familiar.
