Not to be used for advertising or in a defamatory context Abscess on the heel of a 65 year old Hispanic male patient caused by cellulitis. An abscess is a painful pus-filled swelling. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and its underlying tissues. This case was caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that entered through a wound or break in the skin. Cellulitis may cause a fever and chills, and, if left untreated, may result in septicaemia (blood poisoning) or gangrene. It is treated with antibiotics.
