Plan of St Bertelin's Saxon chapel (c1000) at W end of St Mary's Church, Stafford with remains of an earlier wooden building & cross found 5ft below.

Plan of a Saxon chapel (c 1000) at the W end of St Mary's Church, Stafford. Remains of an earlier wooden building & cross found 5 feet below may be associated with St Bertelin - possibly his preaching-cross & oratory - who founded the town of Stafford around AD700. Bertelin's shrine used to be in St Mary's, an Early English church heavily restored 1841-4 by Gilbert Scott. Izaak Walton, born in 1593 at 92 Eastgate Street, was baptized in the church font.
