He strenuously opposed the arbitrary measures of Andros, andafter his overthrow in May, 1689, was again governor until May, 1692,when, at the age of 89, he became first counsel. He was in service of thegovernment 62 years, except during the brief administrations of Dudleyand Andros. He was a popular magistrate; a man of great integrity,piety, and prudence; was opposed to the witch delusion in 1692, and livedto be the Nestor of New England. He advised the surrender of the charterof Massachusetts to Charles II, warily distrusting the ability of the Col-onists to resist. Sept. 23, 1765, he received a deed for five acres of landon the west side of the Kennebec river, in what is now the city of Gardiner;Aug. 5, 1772, he procured 100 acres of land on the east side of the river,in Pittston, for which he paid Dr. Gardiner £66 12s 4d.
