It was foundedDecember 15, 1862, under the title of The Numis-matic Society of Montreal, with a membership ofFrench and English gentlemen—a dual racial charac-ter which has happily characterized it ever since, andmakes it one of the not least effective influences ofharmony and goodwill in the community. In 1866the name was changed to the present title, and in 1869 SIGHTS AND SHRINES OF MONTREAL. 113 an act of incorporation was obtained. In the Chateaude Kamezay the society preserves and adds to its con-siderable collection of coins, medals, maps, books, andmanuscripts. In the Caxton celebration year it held. t ROYAL VICTORIA COLLEGE. a memorable exhibition of rare books; in 1887, aunique exhibition of historical portraits, the catalogueof which remains a list of value to historians; theMaisonneuve Monument is its proposal; and the His-torical Tablets, suggested by one of its members, have 114 SIGHTS AND SHRINES OF MONTREAL. been erected by this society. It publishes the valuableAntiquarian Journal. Its home is in the Chateaude Kamezay. The bociete Historique, another old society, has alsodone valuable work, re-published a number of mostrare manuscrips, including Dollier de Cassons His-toire du Montreal, and has in hand a proposed monu-ment for the landing-place of Maisonneuve, to consistof a granite obelisk, with inscription. The society con-tains, among other possessions, the Sabretache port-folio of Commander Jacques Viger, which furnishedmaterial to the historians
