Optical photograph showing the motion of Barnard's Star over a four year period. Barnard's Star, in the constellation of Ophiuchus, is the star with the greatest proper motion in the sky, moving at over 10 seconds of arc per year. This image is a composite of three negatives made in the springs of 1975, 1977 and 1979. The 'fixed' stars have been aligned so that the movement of Barnard's Star is shown by its displacement between exposures. The three images form a line just above and left of the centre of the image. See back of print 01 for technical details.
