The building is shown upon the drawing made hy von Kraftt in1779, and was hastily dismantled in July of that year andshipped oif to Stony Point, after the capture of the latter positionbv the American Ice Creepers A considerable fortitication took its place which temiwrarilyreceived the name of Fort Clinton, a title which alternated withthe original name of the hill. The works of Fort Clinton wereeventually extended around the upper portion of the hill, approxi-matelv on the line of Foit (leorge and Amsterdam Avenues, ahont1780. The next constructive step undertaken was the connection of thefort by a chain of breastworks and redoubts, extending down intothe valley on the west and up to the :\Iount Washington hillside toa connection with Fort Tryon.
