Colourful billboards contrast to the open air laundry at Dhobi Ghat, Mumbai (Bombay)

Dhobi Ghat is a traditional enterprise in Mumbai (Bombay). Laundry is collected from home and returned, washed and pressed if required, to the door. The scale of Dhobi Ghat, close to the city centre, will take the breath away. Hundreds of laundrymen toil in the open air in concrete wash pens full of soapy water, beating the washing on their own flogging stones. These have been passed through the family for generations. These photographs are of Saat Rasta, a few seconds from Mahalaxmi train station.
