Elsie Worthington Clews Parsons (1875-1941), US anthropologist and sociologist, wearing a bathing suit. Parsons (nee Clews) obtained her doctorate in sociology in 1899 from Columbia University. She married US congressman Herbert Parsons in 1900. She began studying anthropology in 1910, working with Native American tribes in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico, such as the Tewa and Hopi. Her works include 'Social Rule' (1916), 'Pueblo Indian Religion' (1939), and 'Folk-Lore from the Cape Verde Islands' (1923). She was president of several US folklore, ethnology and anthropology associations. Photographed in 1911.
