Sculptures in Philippi, Greece, carved into hillside rock. The ancient city of Philippi in the Edonis region of Greece was originally founded as Crenides in 360 BC. Philip II of Macedon conquered the city in 356 BC and renamed it Philippi. It was a Roman and then Byzantine city until it was abandoned after the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Photographed in 2009.
