FIRST MINNESOTA INFANTRY AT CAMP STONE, NEAR POOLES-VILLE, MARYLAND, IN JANUARY, 1862 The First Minnesota Infantry was the first regiment tendered to the Govern-ment, April 14, 1861. It was mustered into the service April 29, 1861, fourteendays after the Presidents proclamation. The regiment embarked June 22, 1861,for Prairie du Chien, whence it proceeded by rail to Washington. Its first uni-forms furnished by the State were black felt hats, black trousers, and red flannelshirts. It served throughout the war. The population of Minnesota in 1860 was172,023, including 2,360 Indians. It furnished 24,020 soldiers, of whom 2,584were lost. While the whole people of Minnesota were striving night and day tofill up new regiments to recnforce the national armies, they had to maintain gar-risons along the Indian frontiers.
