These locomotives were designed in ac-cordance with drawings and specificationsfurnished by the Railroad Company, andare specially fitted for meeting the fueland operating conditions on tlie LehighValley. They arc suitable for handlingpreference freight on level divisions inthe anthracite districts, and also for ex-press passenger service on the WyomingDivision, where the maximum grade is 96feet per mile. They are therefore excel-lent combination locomotives, and in thisrespect may be compared to the Class J-55Ten-wheelers built some years ago. Theirtractive force, however, is 55 per cent, greater than that of the Ten-^vhecled loco-motives. \ comparison of the boilers of ClassesK-5 and K-S-A shows that no change hasbeen made in the lengths of the tubesand firebox, hut the width of the grate c
