Tin of Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower. Madam Walker (1867-1919) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist. She overcame poverty in the South and became one of the wealthiest African American women of her time by creating and selling a range of cosmetics and hair care products for Black women. Her philosophy of hair culture became very popular among African Americans. In 1911, she established the Madam Walker Manufacturing Company and started recruiting sales agents in major cities across the country.
