The IMuseum was built and thrown open tothe public in the year 1880-1881. The Anatomical Laboratory and the Ph3si-cal Laboratory were constructed, and the Me-chanical Engineering Building, first built someyears before, was much enlarged and improved,in 1886-1887. The Chemical Laboratory,which had been se\cral times enlarged andrenovated, underwent its last reconstructionin 1889. The Mechanical Engineering Build-. 66 UNIJERSriT OF MICHIGAN \_Chap. X ing also received a considerable enlargementin 1900. The General Librar}- was built and occupiedin 1883, the Legislature making a special appro-priation of $100,000 for that object. Again,the book stack was extended in 1898-1899. The first University- Hospital was establishedin one of the old Professors houses on thenorth side of theCampus. Herethe Homceopath-ic Facult} for atime had chargeof a single ward,but this arrange-ment not pro\-ingto besatisfactor\,an independentHomoeopathicHospital was or-ganized in theother of thetwo Professorshouses. Thesehospital facilitiespro\ing to beinsufficient, newhospitals wereerected on Cath-erine Street, onthe brow of thehill o\-erlookingtheri\er,in 1890—1891. The Col-lege of DentalSurger}- nowmoved into thebuilding that theUni\ersity Hos-pital had occupied, but the HomoeopathicFaculty continued to use its former quartersfor purposes of instruction.
