Aneroid barometer, illustration. An aneroid barometer is an instrument for measuring pressure. The instrument consists of a flexible metal box called an aneroid cell or capsule (round), which contains a vacuum. Small changes in atmospheric pressure (blue arrow) cause the capsule to expand or contract. These movements are amplified by a mechanical lever attached to a pointer which allows changes in pressure to be read off the scale (right). Barometers measuring atmospheric pressure are used in weather forecasting.
