British explorer and journalist Sir Henry Morton () Stanley led an expedition to Africa from 1887–1889 to acquire concessions for the British. This illustration, which shows a fight between Stanley's party and warriors that sought to block his expedition took place at the confluence of the Aruwimi and the Livingstone rivers, is from a sketch by Stanley that appeared in his 1890 book "through a Dark Continent."
