He passed soclose to Dover that he counted the warshipsin the Downs, and he counted those atSpithead also. He sailed from Texel onDecember 27, 1779, and he reached Corruna^on January i6th. It is worth noting thatthroughout this extraordinary passage hekept the American flag flying. On reaching Paris, John Paul Jones was thehero of the day. Later inthe evening a laurel wreath was suspended:above his head, but he left hisseat then—aninstance of modesty which is to this day heldup as a model to French schoolboys. In the autumn of 1780 Jones sailed toAmerica in the Ariel with supplies for the^American army. He was the honored guestof the greatest men of the nation. The Con-gress passed resolutions in his honor threetimes. It gave him a gold medal, and it placedhim at the head of the navy, which was anhonor that he had fully earned and which wasto him a greater satisfaction than all otherhonors.
