RIPLEY, James Madison, counsellor-at-law. Prov-idence, was born in Wrentham, Mass., Septem-ber 8, 1834, son of Benjamin W. and Lucy(Cook) Ripley. He is a great-grandson of Na-thaniel Cook, who served with Paul Jones on theBonhomme Richard, which captured the was educated at Smithville Seminary, Lyonsand Friezes Grammar School, and at Brown Univer-sity. After leaving college he read law for a time. JAMES M. RIPLEY. with Carpenter & Thurston, Providence, and thenentered the Albany Law School, where he wasgraduated in 1855. He began the practice of hisprofession in Providence, at 26, now 42, Westmin-ster street, where he has since been located. Afterthe death of General Carpenter he formed apartnership with Benjamin F. Thurston, with whomhe was long associated under the firm name ofThurston & Ripley, and afterwards with Mr. Thurs-ton and his brother under the name of Thurston,Ripley cS: Co. Mr. Ripley had almost the entiremanagement of the law and equity practice of thefirm, in which he acliieved marked success, speedilyacquiring a reputation which placed him among theablest lawyers of the state. He attained especialdistinction in jury cases, and for many years follow-ing his admission to the bar was engaged in thetrial of almost every case of homicide in the state.
