It stands on the declivity of a field called Barn-field Hill, which is itself situated in themidst of other large inclosures of arable land, oneof which, from its extent, is called barn-yard, which is entered by a large gate,has sheds and outhouses on both sides, which attachto the barn, so that the area forms an imperfecthalf-circle. From the yard a narrow lane, abouteighty yards long, leads to a cottage at the foot ofthe hill, at which place Corder borrowed a spade onthe day upon which the murder was probably com-mitted. Many have supposed that at this cottage even ashriek might have been heard, had it issued fromthe spot where the unhappy girl was murdered ;but from experiments we have made, we arriveat quite an opposite conclusion.
