Pothole repair, marking, logging, locating, highlighting, marking the spot with spray paint in Tarleton, Lancashire, UK 3rd February, 2016. Lancashire County Council Pothole Survey. One in eight motorists have suffered damage to their cars from neglected roads and potholes in the past two years, with millions of pounds being paid out in compensation by cash-strapped councils, research has found. A nationwide survey revealed that they had paid out more than £5million after claims by drivers following harsh winters and the crumbling state of Britain's patchwork roads.

When a report of a defect is received a site inspection is carried out to determine an Surveying an appropriate time-scale for carrying out the repair. If the defect is considered dangerous, in that it exceeds tolerances accepted by Courts as being reasonable, then a repair, which may be temporary, is carried out within 24 hours. Other defects are scheduled for repair either as part of a routine safety inspection, usually within 28 days, or as part of a future programme of similar work. The County Council does not define a pothole only defects reported by the Highway Safety Inspection Team. This is only a play on words but it is significant that the public always complain of potholes and the authority only deals with defects. For the purpose of this guidance note, defects which look like potholes are called potholes whether they are on the carriageway or footway. Uneven defects are excluded.
