Perennial, low-growing, throwing out many cree|)ing branches close to the ground. Filled with bitter milky sap. Whole plant very hairy. Flowering .-sterns 1 to 2 feet, erect and simple, almost leafless. The fiery orange reil of the How- ers is very striking. Leaves long, roimded at the top. grad- ually narrowing towanis the l)ase. of an inch long; purplish-black, unripe seed deep red; The seeds are spread by the wind anil are seldom.
