This was the firstepiscopal visit. He confirmed 141 persons, but did not conse-crate either the Church or the burial-grounds. The probablereason was that he had omitted to secure the consent andco-operation of the Government as owners of the land. BishopSpencer came better prepared in 1841. Onsuch occasions it is usual for the principal inhabitants to presenta petition begging the Bishop to consecrate. The petition toconsecrate the Church was signed by the Eev. G. H. Evansand It shows that the building was dedicated to Godin honour of St. John the Baptist. The consecration deed isdated December 12, 1841. At this time the Bev. G. H. Evans was the Chaplain. Therecords show him to have been in many respects a notableman. He was instrumental in promoting the building ofa Church at Bolarum and another at Chuddergha
